Often ‘black hat’ SEO enthusiasts argue that ethical SEO (or white hat SEO) can easily be outperformed by the use of black hat methods.

Maybe it is true that black hat techniques may cause a much rapider and more dramatic effect on a websites Google rankings, if one was to weigh this fact with the possibility that the site will be either penalised or banned if discovered. This changes the attractiveness of black hat SEO for many.

If the black hat SEO methods used are not detectable by Google at the moment, there is a good chance that within an update or two, Google may well notice the black hatter’s techniques.

One example is that Google recently made a decision that it wanted to hit people selling links for PageRank boosting reasons. Many people lost pagerank due to this decision.

Selling links for boosting pagerank is considered as grey hat by many SEO’s, so imagine what Google would do to someone using true blackhat techniques?

Ethical SEO techniques may take a little longer to have effect, but long term ethical SEO is the best option. Good rankings gained through white hat SEO have more of a chance of be maintained -But that’s just my opinion as a white hatter!!!
